Eire Og Triumphant!

28/04/2012Posted by Liam Devlin

Eire Og Under 10’s took part in the South Antrim football blitz at Woodlands on Saturday 28th April and emerged undefeated winning all four challenge games.

First up were Sarsfields and the boys turned in a display of courage and determination to dominate this 10 minute game.  Sean Murray-Lopez top-scored, racking up 1-3, with a range of impressive scores from distance.  Connla McCarthy bagged 2 points and Darragh Doonan 1-1, to sweep aside the opposition.  A goal from Andrew McClean and a first under-10s goal from Cormac Devlin, sealed their fate with the Ogs running out victors by 4-6 to 1-1.

Lagmore Gaels were next up for the young Ogs and once again, although up against stronger opponents, they dominated the match to win 1-4 to 0-2.  This time Andrew top-scored with a marauding display from the back-line, bursting through on two occasions to score 1-1.  Keeper Brendan Murray-Lopez distributed his kick-outs brilliantly; Sean got himself two more points while Darragh poached a point following a blocked shot from Connla.

Next up were St Galls in a hastily re-arranged match after both Gort Na Mona and Rossa fled Woodlands in terror after witnessing the latest Ogs demolition. This encounter was always going to be tight and so it proved.  The game was dominated by the respective defences with the Ogs coming out on top by a single score.  Andrew dropped back to goals and was ably assisted in defending the line by dogged defending by Diamuid Molloy, Brendan, Orla Gilligan and Niamh Burke, who kept St.Galls to only 2 scores from play.  Sean, Cormac and Stephen McQuillan chased everything in sight in midfield, while the ever-dependable Darragh and Connla played their part at the business end by slotting away two goals to edge the Ogs to victory 2-0 to 1-1.

Riding high, the Ogs went straight to their next re-arranged game against Lamh Dhearg and once again dominated proceedings.  Their opponents just could not breakdown the Ogs defence while Sean, Connla and Andrew knocked in 1 goal and 4 points between them to seal their 4th victory of the day.

All in all a brilliant day out for the young Ogs who hustled and outplayed their opponents in every match and fully deserved the congratulations of the large crowd of parents and supporters who came to watch their endeavours.  Well done Ogs!

Eire Og 8-09 Gort Na Mona 7-09

Eire Og Under 10s hosted Gort Na Mona at Woodlands where the young Ogs staged the comeback of all comebacks to shade this thrilling encounter!

Victory looked a long way off however, when after the opening period, the Ogs had only managed a point from Darragh Doonan while their opponents had racked up an impressive 4-4.  The Ogs just could not get their game going against a well organised and physically superior Gorts team.

After the interval the Ogs finally started to play like a team, marking their men and moving the ball up the wings.  This paid dividends immediately with 2 goals and a point from Darragh, a goal from Connla McCarthy and a point from Sean Murray-Lopez.  It was still proving hard to shake off the Gorts though and they responded with 3-3 to win this period as well albeit with the minimum of margins.

It was the third period when the Ogs finally staged their comeback.  They totally dominated their opponents restricting them to 2 further points while hammering in 5 goals and 5 points (Darragh 2-3, Connla 1-0 and Sean 2-2) to take the match.  This was a real never-say-die performance from the Ogs who can be immensely proud of the way they picked themselves up when all seemed lost.  Well done young Ogs!

Young Ogs on Tour!

Eire Og 0 – 7  Sarsfields 5 - 3

On Saturday 24th March 2012, Eire Og Under 10s travelled the short distance to Sarsfields to take part in a challenge match organised by the hosts.  Under the Go-Games scoring mechanism (3 points for an over the bar score and 2 points for a goal), the young Ogs out-scored their opponents by a narrow margin (21-19) in a close-fought and physical game.

The first half of this encounter was a close, low-scoring affair with both sides missing numerous chances.  Sarsfields opened the scoring with a goal and an over the bar and would have went further ahead had it not been from a tremendous point-blank save from Stephen McQuillan between the posts.  The Ogs however kept battling and registered their first over the bar from Sean Murray-Lopez shortly afterwards.  Another score from Darragh Doonan and reply from Sarfields meant that the Ogs went into the break only a point down.

After a few tactical changes at half-time, the Ogs dominated the opening period of this half.  A well-taken free from Sean Murray – Lopez and over the bars from Connla McCarthy and Darragh Doonan eased the Ogs into a comfortable lead and it looked like they would cruise to victory.  Their comfort was short-lived however as Sarfields stormed back with 2 goals and 2 over the bars despite the best efforts of Brendan Murray-Lopez in goals.  A superb pointer from Odhran Maxwell from a tight angle and a further over the bar from the classy Darragh Doonan meant that the Ogs squeaked home despite a last minute goal from Sarsfields.

This was a really brave performance from the young Ogs in the face of some ferocious tackling and strong opponents.  Apart from those who scored and saved, the Ogs were also well served by Cormac Devlin, Eoin Burns, Andrew McLean, Erin Cosgrove, Niamh Burke and Diarmuid Molloy who battled throughout and won hard-fought possession to drive the Ogs onto victory.  Well done Ogs!
