U8 Hurling Go Games

26/05/2012Posted by Ciaran Grant

St Pauls U8 Go Games  :  Colin Glen Multi Sports Centre  :  26 May 2012

Eire Og were invited to the Go Games organised by St Pauls at the new 3G pitches at Colin Glen Multi Sports Centre. The games were 5 a side and Eire Og fielded 2 teams.

The 'A' team had a great start by coming from behind to beat Gort Na Mona by 2 goals to 1, with Carla and Sophia getting the goals. Sophia's long range winner was especially notable. The Ogs good form continued into the second match against St Johns with Pearse and Carla scoring in another 2-1 win. A lightening start in the third game against St Pauls saw the Ogs go 2 goals up through Pearse and Oran. St Pauls drew level with 2 rapid fire goals of their own but the Ogs responded and Pearse grabbed a winner to make it a hat-trick of wins. Unfortunately, Eire Og couldn't make it a clean sweep of wins as they came up against a skillful and strong Portaferry team who ran out winners.

A very young 'B' team played 3 matches in their group. They started off with a defeat against Portaferry in a tight game that could have went either way. The young Ogs dominated possession and chances in their next match against St Teresa's. The St Teresa's goalkeeper made a number of very good saves and the Ogs were very unlucky to come away with only a 1-1 draw. David scored the Og's goal with a good strike. The last game ended in defeat against St Pauls. Our youngest player, Liam, was rewarded for his hard work by scoring a late consolation goal.

Overall, on what was a very hot day, all the young Ogs worked hard and played very well and the event was enjoyed by all the players. mentors and spectators. Thanks goes to the parents for their greatly apppreciated vocal support and for supplying the much needed drinks and ice-creams. A word of thanks also to Tara for managing the 'Mini' Ogs in their games !

Our thanks is also extended to St Pauls for inviting us to the games and organising the matches so well. We have been invited to the second week of games next Saturday. Hopefully, we can take the success of today and build on it next weekend.

Ogs v St Paul's

19/05/2012Posted by Darren Hamill

Unfortunately the Go Games arranged by Saint Paul's GAC were cancelled due to the lack of teams fielding but we were offered a challenge game at U6 and U8 level at their Shaw's Road pitch which we gratefully accepted.

Our teams played on adjacent pitches and for some of the players in both sides there was a bit of Our Lady Queen of Peace classroom rivalry which started before the match began and I am sure the banter will continue in school on Monday morning.

All the games were very competitive and there was some great scores but in the U8 game Saint Paul's pulled away in scores due to their greater knowledge of the "full rules" game. It must be remembered however, that for some of our players this was only their second competitive game and with a lot of training and practice the future of Eire Og hurling is bright.

Thanks:  I would like to thank Paul for inviting us to field our teams. This give our younger players another hour of competitive hurling and they will all progress from the experience. Some of players had also just came direct from Eire Og fundamentals and Gaelic matches at woodlands .

Finally I would like to thank our players parents and family for making these games a special occasion for the players and a reminder that we hope to be playing at U8 level this Saturday (26th May) at the Colin Glen Multi Sport's Centre on the Black's Road. We also have U10 Go Games at Woodlands on Saturday 26th from 10 to noon so again this weekend is very busy for our juvenile players.

U8 Panel:  Adam, Conlan, Conor, David, Gerard, Oran, Pearse

U6 Panel:  Charlie, Joseph, Liam, Peter, Zach W, Zack K.

Well done the Og's !

Go-Games - U6 U8 U10

U6,U8 and U10 Go Games  :  Sarsfield’s Pitch  :  19th June 2012-06-22

Sarsfield’s invited our underage teams to a series of games at their pitch and I am very delighted that we were able to field an incredible 24 hurlers at U6, U8 and U10 level on a Tuesday evening.

Sarsfield’s pitch was very busy on the evening as there was a gaelic match occurring at the same time but we were still able to squeeze the three teams and their opponents into an area of their ground.

U6 Go Games

Tara took charge of our youngest hurlers and although our numbers were low Alannah, Charlie, Liam, Luke and Zach played the better hurling and came away easy victors scoring lots of goals. I hope this will give our mini Og’s the confidence to compete and above all enjoy their hurling. Also thanks to Conor ( Charlie’s father) who refereed these series of games.

U8 Go Games

Ciaran looked after our U8 team and again we had a fantastic number of players and we were able to play a 9- a side match. The panel included Adam, Carla, Conlan, Conor C, Conor E, David, Oran , Pearse H and Sophia. The U8’s came away as victors but the score sheet was a bit closer than the U6’s with the Og’s winning narrowly by 1:2 to 1: 0. David got the all important goal and Pearse scored both points but I believe one of them came from a free won by himself that Drogba would have been proud of. Too much soccer on the TV at the moment !!

U10 Go Games

The Og’s had too many players for the U10 match that they had to boost Sarsfield’s numbers with one of players. Pearce Short volunteered to cross to the other side. Unfortunately Pearce approached the game in the proper manner and actually scored a great goal against us. I will try and explain to him the next time that he is suppose to pass the ball to us and make mistakes etc!!! ( Well done Pearce!!!). The rest of our panel included Alex, Andrew, Aodhan, Caolan, Erin, Gerard, Jack C, Niamh and Stephen. The Og’s came away with a narrow victory 3:5  to 4:1 but we definitely played the better hurling on the evening. As the pitch was quite small the match was a start / stop affair but Andrew won a lot of the dirty ball in midfield and was rewarded with some great scores. Alex also scored a great goal  and Erin had numerous chances. Our Defence played brilliantly and two of our players were in the wars as both Caolan and Niamh took knocks during the quite physical games. Unfortunately Niamh was unable to continue and Pearce S returned to the Og’s.

Firstly I would like to thank Gary and Gareth from Sarsfield’s for organising and inviting us to their pitch. I would now like to thank all the Og’s parents who again came out in their numbers to cheer all the teams out and finally I would like to thank all the players who performed brilliantly on the night and ensured that Eire Og came away with 3 victories.
