Challenge Match v Carryduff

U12 Challenge game v Carryduff
Venue: Musgrave
Date:11th September 2014

In glorious late summer conditions the Og's continued their preparations for the Nipper Quinn championship with a challenge game against County Down side Carryduff.

The game was played on the full pitch, full rules and 15 a side and it was great to get a chance to finalise our starting line up for the Nipper Quinn semi final against Rossa.
The game itself was a classic with the referee calling the final result a draw Brid Og 3:6 Carryduff 4:3 and both teams had provided a great display of hurling.

Thanks
Thanks to Niall and Ronan for travelling to Musgrave at such late notice and thanks to Niall for agreeing to referee the game. Thanks to our parents and players family who hopefully enjoyed the spectacle from the sidelines. Finally well done to the players who hurled brilliantly against a very skilful Carryduff team

Challenge Match v Portaferry

U12 Challenge game v Saint Patrick Portaferry

Date: 6th September 2014

Venue: Portaferry

Brid Og's build up to the Nipper Quinn championship continued with a trip down the peninsula for a challenge game against County Down side Portaferry.

The game was full rules and 15 a side although we did shorten the pitch and use the smaller goals. As the grass was slightly longer than Musgrave the players were told to try and dip the sliotar at every occasion. The  first half was the proverbial" tale of two halves" were we started the stronger getting several goals and points but our opponents had the better of the latter stages and got several major scores when we had difficulty clearing our lines.

On the whistle for half time our players trudged off the pitch as if they had already lost the game but they were reminded that there was still another 25 minutes of game time to play. There were also some changes with Joe replacing Toirealach in nets and JP and Fintan switching markers. This seemed to give us a better shape with Joe continuing his fine form between the sticks and he was well protected by Fintan, Gerard, JP, Sean Shane and Toirealach in our back lines. Brendan and Connla were in excellent form in midfield and they linked up play well. They both contributed to the scoring as well with Connla scoring an excellent goal from distance as well as several points.

Our forwards consisted of Andrew who got several goals in a great second half spell,Brian who scored a great point on his debut and showed a great ability to catch the high ball, Daire who although didn't get a score had several chances, Diarmaid who put in a great shift around half forward, Jack who got the last touch on a major score himself and our youngest players Niall and Pearse who both contributed to a great team performance. Sean had also added to our scoring tally and at the final whistle we had recorded a 10:7 to 5:9 victory.

Thanks

I would like to thank Gerard for the match which was actually what the team needed in preparation for the Nipper Quinn Championship next week. Thanks to John and Gerard for there help with the team selection. Thanks to both Gerards, John, Marie, both Martins,Nieves, Nuala and the two Seamus's and Andrea, James and Thomas for travelling and their vocal support from the side-lines. Special mention to Gerard Whelan Snr who had also gone to a blitz earlier in the day to Ahoghill so the miles were surely clocked up today. Finally well done to the players who were able to produce a great victory against a very skilful Portaferry side who played their part in a very eventful game.

Ps I hope the kids who went across on the ferry to Strangford enjoyed crossing the lough.

Challenge Match v Ruairi Ogs

U12 Challenge game v Ruairi Ogs

Venue : Cushendall

Date: 31st August 2014

With the Nipper Quinn Championship on the horizon a couple of challenge games against high quality opposition have been arranged with the first of these games being against North Antrim side Ruairi Og's of Cushendall.

Unfortunately we were only able to line out 12 players so the game was played using the smaller goals and lined out pitch. Although this was our first run out since the league had finished we stormed to an early 4 point to nil lead with excellent scores from Brendan, Niall and Sean. Brendan, Diarmaid and Sean seemed to be bossing the midfield section. Our usual back line of Gerard and Shane were helped by Luke and Tiorealach and in the first 15 minutes they had contained their markers brilliantly. Our forwards during the game were Jack D and Niall at half forward with Dylan and Pearse occupying our full forward berths.

Our opponents then started to click into gear and their link up play from backs through mid to their forwards at times was excellent and they got some goals and points to take a lead into half time.

In the second half our numbers were boosted by 3 Ruairi Og players and we were able to play 15 a side but the intensity we showed in the first half was missing. We did get several more scores from Niall and Sean but Joe in our nets was the busier keeper and our opponents ran out easy winners.

Thanks

I would like to thank JJ for the invite and the drinks and snacks for our players after the game and I wish them the best of luck in their forthcoming North Antrim Championship Final. Hopefully we can arrange a re-match in the near future. Thanks to Gerard and both Johns for their help with the team and to our parents for travelling to the picturesque venue. Finally well done to the players who hurled well against high quality opposition. Special mention to Pearse who put in a shift after already taking part in a U10 blitz at Cushendun. Hopefully we can get our sharpness back with the forthcoming training sessions and challenge games.
