U12 Provincial Hurling Blitz

Venue: Meadowbank Arena Magherafelt

Date: 7th February 2015

It was the turn of our U12s to take part in the provincial hurling blitz at Magherafelt. Our players were due to play 5 games against Tyrone side Omagh Saint Enda's, Belfast sides Davitts and Ardoyne, Derry side Eoghan Rua Coleraine and SW Antrim side St Ergnat's Moneyglass

Our first game was against St Enda's. Unfortunately our opponents only had 7 players which meant there were a lot of substitutions as we had a panel of 13 players. In this game we started very quickly and got several early scores but Saint Enda's came back at us late in the game but we had done enough to earn the victory

Our second game was against Belfast side the Davitts. Again our opponents only had 8 players so the substitution rate was very high. Both teams were evenly matched but our opponents edged ahead 2-1 at the final whistle.

Our third game was against Derry side Eoghan Rua. Before this game the players were reminded to do the things we have been covering in training and that it was essential that we were first to the ball. This was probably our best performance on the day as we hurled better as a team and took the victory in a competitive game.

Our fourth game was against St Ergnat's Moneyglass. Moneyglass started well and pressurised our midfield but as we got more possession of the sliotar we were able to attack their defence and in the end ran out comfortable winners

Our final game was against North Belfast side Ardoyne. It was agreed before the game that both sides would try and play 11 a side although this did not allow for too much free flowing hurling. Again at the final whistle we had recorded a comfortable victory.

Thanks to Kevin for organising these games. Thanks to John and Gerard for helping with the team Thanks to our players parents and family for travelling to this venue and for their support today. Special mention to Una who had been at the U8 blitz earlier in the day and Marie for bringing a car load of players with her. Finally well done to our players who recorded 4 victories and a narrow defeat. Once again this was a very young team which included several U10s. It must also be mentioned that as we had 13 players there were a lot of substitutions to give all the players adequate game time.

U12 Hurling Blitz

U12 Hurling Blitz

Venue: Jordanstown

Date: 2nd February 2015

Our U12s got their first action as a group when they took part in a hurling blitz at Jordanstown. Our team were due to play St John's , Loch Mor and Rossa but a mix up in the fixtures meant we played Creggan instead of loch mor.

Our first game was against St John's and our players could not match the speed and skill of our opponents who seemed to be able to score without much resistance from our team. Our second game was the rearranged fixture against Creggan. In this game our kids seemed to get their confidence back as both teams were evenly matched with Creggan narrowly taking the victory. Our third game was against Rossa and again the kids raised their game. This was probably the best performance of the evening with both teams trading scores.

Thanks to Kieran for organising the games. Thanks to our players parents for travelling and sorry about the mix up with start times etc.. Finally well done to our players. This was a very young team consisting of 4 P7s and 3 P6s and it was great to see the improvement within the team over the 3 games

Co Down Games

P7 County Down Games
Venue: Eddie Irvine Centre
Date: 11th January 2015

It was our P7s turn to take part in the County Down organised games at the Eddie Irvine Centre. Similar to last week we had enough players to field 2 teams with our first team consisting of mainly P7s and our older P6s and our second team consisting of P6s, P5s with young Liam leading the way for the P4s.
Our older team were due to play in a 6 team blitz but unfortunately Carryduff did not field so the 5 remaining teams were Brid Og, Saint Paul's Hollywood, Saint Paul's Belfast, Liatrom and Portaferry.
Our first game was against a very young St Paul Hollywood and our team got off to a winning start. Our second game was against our local rivals St Paul's Belfast  and although we were beaten 3-1 the Og's has enough chances to at least get a draw in the game.
The Og's third game was against Liatrom , a team which we haven't competed against at this level. Our opponents were very physical and we started slowly but our back lines of Gerard, Conlon together with Niall and Fintan literally put their bodies in the way to prevent them from scoring. This give the Og's the confidence to play a bit of hurling themselves and Owen and Oran got good supply of the sliotar. Several goals were scored by the both teams but at the final whistle the Og's had scrapped the victory in a high scoring contest.
Our final game was against Portaferry and this was a classic. Twice the Og's had taken the lead for the peninsula side to come back to level with us and just when we thought we had secured a draw which our performance on the day would have deserved, Portaferry got 2 scores to take the victory.
Although our record today was 2 wins and 2 defeats the players put in a great shift in 4 very physical contests which can only help their development as hurling players.

A second Brid Óg team consisting of P6s, a couple of P5s and a P4 also played at the Eddie Irvine Centre and put in a series of good displays. In the first game against St Pauls B, Jack gave the Ógs the lead but St Pauls got an equaliser. Near the end, young Liam won a free and struck it low and hard into the corner to give Brid Óg a 2-1 victory.
The next game was against Ballygalget's 3rd team. The Down team got a couple of goals, both scored by their keeper, but the young Ógs ran out comfortable winners. The players must have thought they were world-beaters as it must have been complacency that meant Ardoyne raced into a 3-0 lead in the third match. Before it was too late, Brid Óg rallied and a goal by David started the comeback. Zack became a scoring keeper in this one, when he caught an Ardoyne shot and his clearance upfield ended up past the opposing goalie. By the final whistle the comeback was complete as Brid Óg scraped a 4-3 win.
Portaferry's B team were the next opponents. It had been pointed out by a very astute mentor, that the peninsula side looked like the strongest team in this section. And so it proved, as along with skill they were a physically strong team and they got an early 2-0 lead. The Brid Óg players knew they were in a battle, and although they upped their game the damage had been done and there were no further goals. This was the last game on the schedule, but as there was still time, a rematch was arranged. This time Brid Óg knew what to expect and were faster, sharper and hungrier from the start. They were the better team throughout and gained revenge by coming out 4-2 on top.

Four wins from five games was a great return for these players, as none of the team were the full age for these P7 games. All the players got among the goals even Zack who played four and half of the games as goalkeeper!
