Ulster Provincial Tournament

U12 Ulster Provincial Tournament

Venue: Meadowbank Arena Magherafelt

Date: 15th February 2014

Brid Og's U12s fielded in the prestigious Ulster provincial hurling at the Meadowbank Arena and it was reassuring to see an increase in player numbers compared to recent blitzes and included Niall, Owen and Pearse who had already played 6 matches at the North Antrim League in Ballymena.

Our opponents today were Saint Enda's B, Bredagh A and B, Saint Paul's and Rossa B. Only goals counted in this blitz and the players were told to strike the sliotar low. At the end of the 5 games we have recorded 5 victories scoring an incredible 25 goals in total and credit to our defence with 4 clean sheets, Saint Paul's being the only team to hit the back of our net. During the games all the players positions were rotated and we scored some great goals from distant pocs but highlight of the game had to be the back pass from Sean to Brendan in the Rossa game!

Thanks

I would like to thank Kevin for organising the games in this wonderful arena for gaelic sports. Thanks to our parents for travelling and offering the players lifts. Finally well done to all the Brid Og hurlers who played brilliantly today

Co Down Games

First Year County Down Games

Venue: Eddie Irvine Centre

Date: 9th February 2014

Brid Og's first year team took part in the second round of games at the North Down venue. Unfortunately due to the U10 North Antrim league, Sean being away with the school and Connla not feeling well we were only able to field 1 team

Our opponents today were Belfast clubs Saint Gall's, Rossa, County Down side Ballygalget and Armagh side Keady. We were also due to play Carryduff but unfortunately their players had to leave before we could play them.

Our first game was against Saint Gall's and unfortunately we give their players too much respect and room and they came away with a large scoring victory. Our second game was against Keady and there was that little matter of that Final before Christmas last year. The Og's started brilliantly and got several scores before our opponents got a score of their own but there was still enough time for us to complete our revenge with a 5 : 1 victory to the Og's.

Our third game was against Ballygalget who were a very skilful and physical side and although we did get 3 goals ourselves our opponents got 6. Our final game of the day was against Rossa. This was a very high scoring contest with the Shaw's Road side edging the game by 6 goals to 5.

Our scores today came mainly from the stick of Ronan who played brilliantly in midfield in all the games. Jack and Diarmaid also helped with the scoring but score of the day had to go to Brendan who scored a brilliant strike in the air on the "volley" against Rossa. Gerard and Shane did not get any scores today but contributed greatly to the teams performances.

N Antrim League

U12 North Antrim League

Venue: Saint Pat's Ballymena

Date:18th January 2014

Brid Og hurling team this year are able to field 2 teams in the North Antrim Indoor Hurling league and today's preliminary round for one of the teams was at Saint Patrick's School in Ballymena.

The teams competing were hosts All Saints Ballymena, Saint Enda's, Saint Paul's, Rossa and County Down side Bredagh. The games are ground rules only and are played with the larger sliotar.

The Og's played incredible hurling on the day and every player scored including our goalkeeper with two own goals (Sorry Brendan!). In fairness Brendan was excellent between the posts today only conceding 3 goals in all the games with 3 clean sheets to his name. Gerard was his usual dependable self in defence and the midfield duo of Sean and Connla linked up brilliantly to get a lot of scores for the team. Sean kept mentioning that he scored all 6 goals against All Saints!!. Connla also scored several goals from distance. Diarmaid was our main player in the forward positions and helped our scores tally with some delightful pulls of the sliotar. There were also goals from our two youngest players Niall  and Pearse who contributed to our teams performances. At the end of all the 5 games we recorded 4 wins and 1 draw.

Thanks

I would like to thank Owen for organising these games.  Thanks to Gerard for helping with the team and to our players parents and family for travelling to this venue and their support during the games. Finally well done to our players who today showed how skilful they are at the ground skills of the game of hurling. Hopefully these performances today will grade them in Division 1 for their games next week. Also good luck to our second team tomorrow at Saint Malachy's College Belfast.

The next day another Brid Og team had their turn in the preliminary group stage

Venue: Saint Malachy's Belfast

Date: 19th January 2014

Brid Og were able to field a second U12 team at Saint Malachy's Belfast today and it was like' groundhog day' as our opponents were similar to the teams faced at Saint Pat's Ballymena yesterday - hosts Saint Enda's, Saint Paul's, Rossa and Bredagh with North Antrim side Larne making up the group of 6 teams

Similar to yesterday our first game was against Rossa . Unfortunately this game ended in defeat  but our team learned quickly from our opponents for the requirements and skills needed for the indoor game.

Our next game was against Saint Paul's and the Og's started to perform well with the confidence of an early couple of goals. The third  game was against host side Saint Edna's. This game was nip and tuck with both goalkeepers giving away penalties for coming out of their area but luckily at the final whistle we had won by the narrowest margin 4-3.

Our fourth game was against County Down team Bredagh and our players were told of the importance of keeping their fine run going and in probably our best performance of the day we scored some excellent goals in a 5-1 victory.

Our final game was against Larne. Again the players were told of the importance of this game but our opponents started the brighter and took an early lead. We then got a couple of goals but back came Larne with a score of their owe. Again we would take the lead but our opponents would come back with another score. After a couple of changes in player positions we managed to hold onto a lead which we kept to the final whistle.

Today we were able to field 6 players and their positions were rotated in all the games. Our scorers today were Andrew, Jack, Joe and Shane. Tiorealach played brilliantly in his defensive role during the games and although Owen did not score himself he was unlucky on several occasions and did also contribute several assists for our team. Our record for today showed 4 Wins and 1 defeat and combined with yesterday's results we had 8 Wins 1 Draw and 1 Loss which is a record any team would be proud off.

Thanks
I would like to thank Saint Enda's for hosting and refereeing the games. Thanks to John for helping with the team selections and our parents for their support from the viewing gallery. A special mention to Seamus and Maire for supplying the snacks for the players. We now anxiously wait for the grading round of  games next week-end where hopefully yesterdays team Brid Og 2 will be in Div 1 and Brid Og 1 will be in Div 2 as their performances have merited it. It can not be under-estimated  what an achievement it would be to have a team in both these top divisions as this competition involves all the best teams from Ulster.

Brid Og 1 Rossa 4
Brid Og 7 Saint Paul'sII 0
Brid Og 4 Saint Enda'sII 3
Brid Og 5 BredaghII 1
Brid Og 7 Laharna Og 4

Well done the Og's
