U12 South Antrim League

Brid Og 2:6 Gort Na Mona 1:2

Date: 28th April 2014

Venue: Musgrave

Brid Og started their U12 league campaign against Gort Na Mona at Musgrave and it was great to see the 20 players who have trained during the winter available for the game.

The game itself was played in perfect conditions and the format for the league match was 13 a side with a shortened pitch and smaller goals although both teams agreed to field 14 players for this game.

As with the Ballycastle game, the day before, the Og's started very lively with Andrew getting a goal and Brendan getting a point from distance but unfortunately the Gorts replied with a goal of their own. Connla added another point to our tally and then Sean went on a personal crusade scoring a total of 1 goal and 4 points. Our opponents could only score another 2 points and the Ogs came away with a 2:6 to 1:2 victory.

Although at times our back lines of Fintan, Gerard, Joe, JP, Nathan and Shane were under pressure they played brilliantly and cleared their lines with Shane pulling off a fantastic save late in the game when he replaced Nathan in nets.

Our forward lines were rotated due to substitutions but Andrew, Brendan, Diarmaid, Dylan, Jack C, Jack D, Luke,Martin, Oisin and Padraig with our youngest players Niall and Pearse also getting a run out in the forward lines.

It was great to see the large number of players for our first league game and hopefully this will continue through the whole league campaign. Thanks to Oliver for refereeing the game and to John and Gerard  for helping with the team. As usual we have a large vocal support from the sidelines which I am sure spurred the team on during difficult moments during the game.

As well as the league games we are also trying to organise some challenge games against North / South West Antrim teams and Derry sides as well.

Challenge v Ballycastle

U12 Challenge game v McQuillans Ballycastle

Date 27th April 2014

Venue: Ballycastle

Brid Og were offered a challenge game against all county Division 1 side McQuillans Ballycastle. This would be excellent preparation for our forthcoming South Antrim League campaign and our hosts also invited our team to watch the Leinster round robin Senior hurling game between Antrim and Westmeath at McQuillan Park

The format of our challenge game would be 3 x 15 minute 'thirds' and both sides were able to field 15 players. As the Antrim Senior game was at our hosts pitch the challenge game was relocated to James McShane pitch. This meant that the game was played on a full pitch using the full size posts.

In the first ' third' our players got off to a flier and got two early goals from the sticks of Sean and Jack. This kick started our opponents and they started to knock the sliotar about with some purpose and this resulted in them getting several goals and pointed scores.

We tried to change our formation around to help nullify their attacking potential and although this worked to a certain degree there greater awareness of space and the size of the goals meant that they continued their scoring. In the final third we became more attacking ourselves with Brendan, Connla and Sean adding to our tally and there were near misses from Andrea, Ciara, Jack and Pearse. At the final whistle the players shook hands and both teams posed for a group photograph.

Our players were escorted to McQuillan park  just in time to see the arrival of the Westmeath team and Antrim players.  The Antrim game itself was an exciting affair with Westmeath taking an early 4 point to nil lead but Antrim gradually got into the game with an man of the match display from Dunloy's Paul Shiels and Antrim won the game in glorious sunshine 0:23 to 2:11. At the final whistle the Brid Og players rushed onto the pitch and got signatures from both Antrim and Westmeath players and some of the players even got some momentos from the Westmeath management.

I would like to thank Ciaran and Declan for the challenge game and the clubs hospitality during the day. Hopefully we can arrange a rematch at Musgrave for our U10s and U12s as suggested. Thanks to Alistair, Caroline, Gerard M, Gerard W and Oonagh for travelling to the game and finally well done to the players who competed well against quality opposition. I also hope they enjoyed the senior game in the sunshine in Ballycastle

Challenge Match v Naomh Moninne

U12 Challenge game v Naomh Moninne

Date: 5th April 2014

Venue: Fairgreen Pitch Dundalk

Brid Og's U12 hurlers were invited to a challenge game in the Wee County of Louth and the host club was Dundalk side Naomh Moninne who donned the yellow and black kit similar to Kilkenny. The game was 2 halves of 20 minutes with full rules including soloing and all 17 players were allowed to play although this made the match a bit scrappy at times.

The Og's started in great style with Connla and Sean linking well together as well as giving possession to our forwards. This resulted in scores from themselves as well as goals and points from our forwards Andrew, Dylan, Fintan, Jack,Martin, Niall and PJ. Although Pearse did not score himself he had several chances and gained possession of the sliotar on regular occasions.

In the second half Shane who had taken a knock replaced Brendan in nets. To be honest our opponents altered their players positions and this meant our back lines of Brendan, Ciara, Gerard,Joe, Luke and Nathan were under more sustained pressure in the second half and they got several fine scores of their own but at the final whistle the Og's had came away with a great victory which will hopefully set them up for their forthcoming league games.

I would like to thank Josephine and the other Naomh Moninne mentors for the invite to field and thanks to the referee who had to listen to the odd comment from our players!. Thanks to our parents and family for travelling to the Dundalk venue and apologies for the wait at the supermarket and the laps of Dundalk for some of them and I hope the victory made up for these inconveniences. Special thanks to Nuala and Martin who supplied the players with drinks and snacks at the end of the game.

Finally thanks to our players who turned out in great numbers for the game. A special thanks to Joe who hurled the entire game even though he was not feeling well. Also to Dylan, Fintan , Jack, Luke, Nathan and PJ who debuted for Brid Ogs U12s today.

Brid Og Panel: Andrew, Brendan, Ciara, Connla, Dylan, Fintan, Gerard, Jack, Joe, Luke, Martin, Nathan, Niall, Pearse,

PJ, Sean, Shane
