North Antrim U12 Blitz

Venue: Cushendun

Date: 17th May 2014

Our U12 hurlers were invited to a blitz in the picturesque surroundings of the Emmets pitch in Cushendun however some of our contingent had gone the scenic route pass Ruairi Og's pitch in Cushendall.

The games themselves were 11 a side, full rules (no soloing) and 10 minutes straight with emphasis and points being rewarded for the skill of catching the sliotar above the head. The teams participating were host club Emmets, Saint Enda's, Loch mor dal gcais, Creggan, Glenravel (Saint Brendans) and Glenshesk. There was a league format to the blitz with the top 2 teams due to play off in a final.

Our first two games on the bottom pitch against hosts Cushendun and Loch Mor dal gcais put us in a great position as we had recorded 2 victories and it was great to see the link up play from defence through midfield to our forward line.

We now moved to the top pitch which included the larger goal posts. Our first opponent on this pitch was Creggan an opponent we had been beaten by the previous week on their own pitch. This game was fantastic with both sets of players giving their all and the end result was a drawn game with a point each scored and the same amount of over the head catches. Hopefully we can organise a rematch for 'third time lucky'.

Our players were thrown straight away into another game against Glenravel (Saint Brendans). This was also a great game of hurling with two evenly matched teams who competed for every ball. Glenravel took a goal lead late in the game but this seemed to gel the team together and we replied with a goal of our own seconds later. At the final whistle the scores were level but we probably shaded it with clean catches from our team.

We now moved down to the lower pitch for our fifth game against Glengormley side Saint Enda's and our numbers were boosted by a Saint Enda's player Jack who actually scored for us and we took the victory in this game as well.

At the final whistle is was decided that the blitz was completed and we did not get the chance to play Glenshesk. The Final itself was also cancelled and in a great gesture from the host club all the players received drinks, fruit and a medal as a memento of their days hurling.

I would like to thank Mary for organising this blitz and Paul and the rest of the Emmet"s mentors for hosting the games as well as the medals and snacks for the kids. Thanks to Gerard and John for helping with the team and a special thanks to John for refereeing. Thanks also to our players parents for travelling to this venue as obviously we could not play these games without their help. Finally the players. There were some great individual displays from the team today but what impressed me the most was the way we played as a team from defending to attacking and hopefully we can bring this to our league games.

Friendly v Creggan

U12 Challenge game v Kickhams Creggan

Venue: Creggan

Date: 10th May 2014

A busy week for our hurlers continued with a challenge game against South West Antrim side Creggan. Games against these games in recent years have been exciting affairs and we all remember the North Antrim league Final a couple of years ago.

This game was no exception and the game was 13 a side in the full pitch with two halves of 25 minutes. This give both teams plenty of space to show their skills. Again late in the half our opponents got a couple of scores.

In the second half we tried to give us a more attacking formation but our opponents tried to by pass our extra players in midfield with the effect that they put our backs under immense pressure and got some more scores. Changes in formation again give us a more solid structure and this give us the protection to go and attack our opponents and we got goals from Paudraig and Pearse and a well taken point from Brendan.

I would like to thank Michael and Eamon for the game and I wish them all the best in their future games. Thanks to Gerard for helping with the team and diverting from the Giro da Italia. Thanks to the two Martins, Seamus and Nuala for travelling and support. Finally well done to this young and slightly inexperienced team who hurled brilliantly in horrendous weather conditions.

Co Derry Go Games

U12 County Derry Go Games

Venue: Lavey

Date: 7th May 2014

Through Ciaran's local knowledge we were able to take part in County Derry organised go games. Our opponents on the day were Derry City side Na Magha and our hosts Lavey

Our first match was against Na Magha. Both sides played 16 players and the game was to halves of 10 minutes. The game was an excellent encounter with both sides defences playing well. Just on the whistle for half time our opponents got their goal. Our second half was much better but Na Magha were having plenty of the sliotar as well. On the final whistle Sean and the rest of the Brid Og contingent thought he had scored the equaliser only for the referee who will remain nameless give a free out for 3 times in the hand. Just to say the team huddle at the end of the game was hard to listen to.

Our final game was against the hosts Lavey. Unfortunately Connla had to leave so our midfield had to be changed around with Shane taking this role. This game started brilliantly for us when Paudraig and Jack scored goals with our opponents getting 2 points in return. In the second half our hosts came out a different team and threatened our goals on numerous occasions. This put our back line under severe pressure and Lavey got several scores. The game also got very physical. At the final whistle Lavey came away with a narrow victory.

I would like to thank Ciaran and the Lavey mentors for allowing us to play in these go games. Thanks also for the juice, teas and sandwiches after the game. Although we came away with 2 defeats the games will help with our preparation for our league campaign. Thanks to Gerard and John for helping with the team and to our parents for travelling and their support.

Brid Og Panel: Brendan, Connla, Diarmaid, Dylan, Fintan, Gerard, Jack C, Jack D, Joe, Luke, Nathan, Niall, Oisin, Paudraig, Pearse, Sean, Shane, Tiorealach
