Co Down Games

25/01/2015Posted by Darren Hamill

P6 County Down Hurling games
Venue: Eddie Irvine Centre
Date: 25th January 2015

It was our P6's first run out at the County Down venue and unfortunately we did not have enough players for 2 teams as previously planned. Our opponents on the day were county Down sides Ballycran, Carryduff and Portaferry with  St Paul's Belfast making up the fifth team in the group.

Our first game was against Carryduff and the players hurled brilliantly scoring a lot of goals and recorded a high scoring victory. Our second game was against local side Saint Paul's. These games are always tight affairs and today was no different. Our players were told that our opponents were going to be strong and we would have to hurl at a high level to get something out of the game. After a slow start were St Paul's got a couple of goals some of the players positions were rotated and we finally took control of the game and got several scores of our own to take the victory.

Our third game was against Ballycran. Again our team started slowly with our opponents taking an early lead but credit to the players they raised their game and got their third victory of the day. Highlight of the game and probably the day was the score from Niall who had been in the wars all day flipped the sliotar over his opponents head to find some space and had the skill to volley the ball into the back of the Ballycran net. A score which would grace any hurling pitch.

Our final game was against peninsula side Portaferry. This was a very physical tussle from the throw in and both teams seemed to be up for the challenge. Again we were slow starters and our opponents got a early lead. The Og's came back with some efforts of their own but unfortunately when the final whistle was blown we had been beaten by the slenderness of margins and had been playing probably our best hurling in the latter stages of the game.

Thanks
I would like to thank Conor for organising the games today. Thanks to John for helping with the team and thanks to the parents for travelling and their vocal support for the team. Finally well done to the players today. As we had 9 players and the games are 6 a side there were a lot of changes within the team which probably didn't help but credit to the players they seemed to adapt to this well. It was also great to see the return to hurling for some players and hopefully they enjoyed their game time in Bangor today. When you combined this with the fantastic performances of the U10s yesterday in the North Antrim league this was a great weekend for our players who are P6 and below.

U10 North Antrim League Division 3
Venue: Boy's Model School
Date: 24th January 2015

After the grading round of matches Brid Óg were placed in division 3 of the North Antrim League. The coaches all felt that the team should have been in division 1, after topping their group last weekend, but the organiser's decision had to be accepted. On the day the Ógs showed that they deserved to be in a higher division as they were easily the best team throughout.

St Patrick's from Donegal, Rossa 2 and Oisin's 3 failed to turn up, so the number of games was reduced down to 3 for each team. In the first game against Dunloy 2, Brid Óg had plenty of scoring opportunites, but the Dunloy keeper was in inspired form. Owen finally made the breakthrough and went on to get a couple of more goals and the game finished 3-0. Next was a physical encounter with Slaughtneil 2 and the Ógs stood up to the battle and came away with a 2-0 win with Zack and Jack scoring the goals. The final match was against Ballygalget 2 and Brid Óg saved their best for last and recorded a 7-0 win, Pearse scored a hat-trick with Jack and Eoin among the goals again. Their final goal was the best of the day when Liam hit a pinpoint pass from the wing to the edge of the square and Eoin doubled on the ball fire it into the net - exactly the kind of play that had been discussed at training!

That was the competitive action over and Brid Óg had topped the group to qualify for next week's division 3 final. It is unclear who they will play in the final as the other three teams all beat each other and had 1 win each, but hopefully Brid Óg can now go on to win the final. We have played divisional finals on two other occasions and lost both times, so hopefully our luck will be in this time.

There was still time to play a friendly against Dunloy. This was a full-rules game. Liam scored at the very start of the game and that put Brid Óg in control. Dunloy did get a couple of goals, but the Ógs ran out comfortable winners.

Event: U10 North Antrim Indoor Hurling League

Today saw the first week of the very important North Antrim U10 Indoor League. The draw resulted in Brid Og being drawn in the one of the toughest groups, with our opponents consisting of Loughiel, Bredagh, Creggan, All Saints Ballymena, Rossa and St Patricks. On the day Loughiel, Rossa and St Patricks failed to field. This played havoc with the fixtures and resulted in some quick rearranging of the schedule. It was agreed that a bye would be given for matches against teams which failed to field.

Our first game was against Bredagh and the Brid Og team were slow to start. However after some encouragement the fire seemed to take hold and the team started to perform as a unit. This was a hard fought end to end game which resulted in a draw. At one stage the Bredagh keeper breached the semi-circle which should have resulted in a penalty for Brid Og, however the referee failed to notice and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The next game involved an encounter with All Saints. Brig Og dominated the game from the outset and both Eoin and Zack managed to breech the All Saints defence and place the sliotar in the back of the goal. This game finished Brid Og 2 All Saints 0. This game saw great performances from all players with Jack, Connor and James putting in a solid performance throughout. Liam narrowly missed a penalty as it struck the post and skidded along the goal line, unfortunately a defender managed to flick the sliotar to safety.

The final game in the schedule involved a game against Creggan. This team had hurled brilliantly in their games thus far and had managed to defeat Bredagh. The players were reminded of the importance of this game and were encouraged by mentors and parents alike. This had the desired effect and again Brid Og dominated this game with both Pearse and David finding the back of the net. One of which was a well taken penalty by Pearse.  Young Liam and Zack also managed to get on the score sheet in what was a fantastic game. This game even provided an opportunity for young James McCarney to get a run out, despite being only 6 and not expecting to play he performed brilliantly.

There are some very important points to note from today’s game, firstly the Brid Og team were the only team not to be defeated on the day and the only team which did not concede a single score to any of its opponents. 4 of the players today were only 8 and had no hesitation about stepping up an age group.  If the our calculations are correct this performance will place us at the top of this group and into Division 1 for the next round – we will await confirmation of this from the event organisers early next week. This is a truly fantastic achievement for this young team who should be proud of their performance today, the mentors are certainly proud of their performance. Thanks to Darren for helping with the team today and to the parents for travelling and providing much needed support.

Team: Eoin, Pearse, David, Zack, Jack, Connor, Liam, James McC, James K
