U10 Blitz - Creggan

20/08/2011Posted by Darren Hamill

Eire Og U10s took part in the North Antrim coaching and development blitz at Creggan's Pitch on Saturday 20th August 2011. The other teams competing were Tir Na Og, Randalstown and St Joseph's Glenavy.

Match No.1  -  Eire Og v Tir Na Og

Before the matches started Tom McCann suggested that there would be points awarded for the skills of hand passing and blocking\hooking as well as 3 points for a “point” and 1 point for a “goal” and this was communicated to the players. Our midfield pairing of Conor and Conla both scored points from distance and back line of Ciara and Adam added to the scoring through their blocking skills. Our forward line of the Pearc(s)es and Aodhan fought tirelessly for the ball and Daniel was solid in nets.

Match No2  -  Eire Og v Creggan Kickhams

Our second match was against the hosts Creggan and they were the strongest opposition we faced during the blitz. Our midfield duo, Conor and Connla had a great tussle with their Creggan opponents but the hosts scored some great points from distance. Again the Ogs scored points for their display of skills but the hosts ran out winners.

Match No3  -  Eire Og v Saint Joseph's Glenavy

Our final match was against Saint Joseph's and our numbers were boosted by a couple of Glenavy players who were placed into midfield and backs. The match was very tight and physical but the Ogs scored heavily in both skills and scores. The highlight was the goal scored by young Daniel who lifted the sliothar rounded this opponent and blasted the ball into the back of the Glenavy net.

It was great to see that our slightly inexperienced team (3 x U8s) were still able to compete at this level.

Thanks again to all the players and parents for attending the blitz and it is great to witness the continuing improvement of all the Ogs during the year.

Gerard built bridges between the clubs when he met Creggan's chairman after the match. Hopefully this will lead to a competitive but friendly rivalry between the teams.

Feile At Stormont

06/08/2011Posted by Gerard Murray

The Ogs took to the lawns at Stormont on Saturday 6th August – an unusual setting at this point in history but one which on the day was enjoyed by all.

The Ogs won their three games against Ardoyne, Lamh Dhearg and McDermotts. Ronan got a hat trick of goals, Dylan scored his first goal and Sean ended up with a sling on his arm (which he is still sporting in Alicante!) – thanks to Order of Malta! ‘Big’ Jack Robinson was on hand to marshall and advise the youngsters. All round – a fine day was had by all. Thanks to Deborah Hamill (or should that be Ciara?) for the cucumber sandwiches ( no crust and cut into triangles ‘cause they taste better that way!). No complaints from me as kids never ever want to eat a sandwich made made with VEG ! Next year I want prawn cocktail sarnies and a Pimm’s ‘n’ ice Deborah !!!

Many thanks to all the parents and supporters – please forward any photographs so I can distribute them.

Feile Blitz - Casement Park

30/07/2011Posted by Darren Hamill

On Saturday 30th June 2011 Eire Og's U10 hurlers took part in the Feile celebrations at Casement Park organised by Sarsfield's Club. There were a total of 8 teams participating in the blitzes and Casement was divided into 4 playing pitches.

Saturday heralded the return to action of young Adam who had missed the last couple of training sessions and matches through injury. We are all glad to see his return .

The Ogs played a series of 4 matches in glorious conditions. Each match consisted of 2 halves of 8 minutes and this resulted in a lot of tired players at the end.

The Ogs opposition were the hosts Sarsfields, Rossa, Gort Na Mona and Saint Galls. Although the Ogs fielded a slightly inexperienced team all our players played to their potential and it was great to see how they all have improved and were able to adapt to the various changes in positions they were asked to play.

I hope all the players and parents had a wonderful day and it was nice for our players to get the opportunity for playing time on our counties pitch. It would be nice if this could become a regular occurrence for both our hurlers and footballers.

The Ogs:
