Joe McKelvey U10 Hurling Tournament

04/06/2012Posted by Darren Hamill

Joe McKelvey U10 hurling tournament   :   Rossa and St Paul's Pitches   :   4th June 2012

Eire Og were invited to the annual Joe McKelvey memorial tournament for U10 hurlers. Due to the number of teams St Paul's pitch was also required to accommodate all the games. As Ballygalget could not field a team Rossa had asked ourselves to mix and match a second team and this give all our players valuable game time.

Eire Og's Antrim team were pitched against Saint Enda's, Saint Gall's B team and Lamh dhearg Keady. Our Belfast team took Ballygalgets spot and had matches against Saint Paul's, Rossa B and Eoghan Ruadh B teams.

Eire Og 1:3 Saint Enda's 0:1

Eire Og Antrim got off to a flier with a well earned victory against Saint Enda's. Connla and Ronan were controlling midfield and Sean , Shane and Andrew were tidy at the back. Darragh got on the score sheet with a goal and the Og's eased to a victory.

Eire Og 3:4 St Gall's 0:0

Eire Og made hard work in their second match as it was late in the game when the Og's pulled away with their goals. Again our back line were very strong with our opponents not getting any scores . Connla and Ronan aided by Sean had the majority of the possession of the sliotar and got some great long range pointed scores. Our forward lines were rotated and contributed to the scoring as well.

Eire Og 1:4 Lamh dhearg Keady 0:4

The Og's were told of the importance of this match as victory would place our Antrim team in the Division 1 semi-final against one of the other group winners. In a very tense first half the teams traded scores with Connla and Sean getting the majority of the scores. In the second half the Og's got the goal that settled them down and with this victory Eire Og Antrim topped their Group D rivals.

Eire Og 5:1 Saint Paul's 0:1

Eire Og's Belfast team first match was against Saint Paul's. In a game of high scoring Eire Og ran out easy victors with Andrew and Niall dominating in the forward line. Diarmaid and Pearce S were also enjoying there midfield role. Brendan was effective with Pearse H and Shane in the backs. With the game won most of the positions were rotated with Alex and Jack P replacing Andrew and Jack C.

Eire Og 1:4 Rossa 4:2

With our Antrim team playing Saint Gall's on an adjacent pitch our Belfast team were restricted to 6 very young players. To boost our numbers we were given 2 players from the hosts team and although they helped with possession a lot of their strikes seemed to go wide!. Niall was now playing in nets and Brendan , Pearce and Jack C played well in defence but unfortunately Rossa got a couple of good scores. In the second half the Og's competed better and they were rewarded with scores of their own.

Eire Og 0:1 Eoghan Ruadh 1:0

This was the tightest match of the day with both teams giving full commitment. The first half ended scoreless and our team was rotated to keep the players fresh. Eire Og took the lead with a great point but in a mix up in our back lines Eoghan Ruadh got the goal to give them the victory.

Our teams efforts were rewarded with the Antrim Team facing Eoghan Ruadh A in the Division 1 semi-final and remarkably our younger Og's in the Belfast team had managed to get themselves into the Division 2 semi-final against Loughguile Shamrock's through their high scoring tally.

SEMI FINAL  --  Eire Og 1:2 Eoghan Ruadh 4:3

Our opponents for the Division 1 semi-final were the highly rated Eoghan Ruadh A team. The Og's were again told that if they wanted it the game was there for the taking. The Og's started the scoring when Sean directed the sliotar over the bar but Eoghan Ruadh replied quickly with a score of their own. Unfortunately Connla who had been in the wars all day got hit again by an opponents stick and had to retire from the game. The teams shape had to be replaced with Ronan now going into midfield and it was during this team rotation that Eoghan Ruadh got their first goal. With an uphill battle in front of them already, things got even worse when our second midfielder Sean had to retire through injury as well and our opponents from Dungannon ran out easy victors.

SEMI FINAL -- Eire Og 0:1 Loughguile 4:3

Our Belfast team reward for their heroics in the group stages was a match against North Antrim side Loughguile Shamrocks. Although our young Og's tried their best they were up against a more physical "A" team and the Shamrock's got off to a great start with a couple of quick goals.

Brendan and Pearce S were covering the pitch looking for possession of the sliotar and both Jack's and Alex tried their best but unfortunately they were up against a stronger outfit on the day. It must also be mentioned that Pearse H at the tender age of 6 played brilliantly in nets and was not at fault for any of the goals and young Niall performed to a high standard in the forward line.

Thanks:  I would like to thank Paddy Trainor and Rossa for inviting us to this well organised tournament and thanks also for the drinks and snacks for the players. Also thanks to our ever present parental support who seem to be increasing at every occasion and they vocally urged our players on during all their games.

I would finally like to thank our players for competing brilliantly against teams of the highest pedigree in Ulster hurling. Effectively our two teams got into  Division 1 and Division 2 semi-finals in what was essentially an Ulster league with teams from Antrim (North / South), Down, Armagh and Tyrone competing in 4 Divisions.

Unfortunately our success in getting our two teams in the top two semi-finals ultimately took its toll on our players as at the end of these matches there were a lot of tried players but even in defeat our players can hold their heads up high as they have again enhanced the name of Eire Og hurling team and I predict that we will be invited to further blitzes and tournaments in the near future due to their heroic performances today.

Well done the Ogs !

U10 Go-Games at Lamh Dhearg

30/05/2012Posted by Darren Hamill

The Og's had enough players to field both Antrim and Belfast teams and for the Antrim team there were great victories against the hosts Lamh dhearg, Saint Paul's Antrim and Sarsfield's with the only blip a narrow defeat against Rossa.

Jack C played a keepers role for the majority of the games but got his chance up front against Sarsfield's with one of his strikes of the sliotar going narrowly wide. Brendan and Diarmaid were commanding in defence clearing their lines brilliantly when required. Our midfielders of Andrew, Connla and Pearce S dominated most of their matches with Connla scoring some great points and goals. Andrew and Pearce S tried to get the sliotar into their hands at every opportunity and Pearce S frequently introduced the hand pass. Our forwards, Alex, Darragh,Gerard and Jack C  hurled brilliantly during the games with Alex and Darragh scoring some great goals.

The Eire Og Belfast team played two matches and Conor E, Oran and Pearse H were temporarily borrowed from our U8 ranks. In their first match against St Paul's Caolan in nets found it hard to clear his lines from the poc outs and our back line of Adam and Jack P were under a lot of sustained pressure. Our midfield of Alex, Aodhan and Pearce S got some possession of the sliotar but they were unable to feed our forward line of Conor E and Oran and St Paul's came away with the victory.

The Og's second match was against Saint John's Belfast team and the Og's lined out with Aodhan in nets, Alex and Oran taking up defensive duties. Our midfield trio were Adam, Conor E and Pearse H with Caolan and Jack P up in the forward positions.

The Og's got off to a flier when Adam pulled on the ball brilliantly to feed Caolan who in turn blasted the sliotar into the back of the net. Aodhan was a virtual spectator during the match with Oran and Alex aided by Conor E clearing their lines. Adam and Pearse H were winning most of the ball around the middle of the field and the Og's got a second goal when Alex was able to block the Saint John's keeper and was first to react, knocking the sliotar into the back of the net. There were suggestions from the sidelines that the score should be disallowed for a "square ball" but I think we can mark it down as a 2-0 victory to the Og's.

I would like to thank Kieran Megraw and Lamh dhearg for organising and hosting the games. Thanks as usual must go to our players parents and family who came out in a cold and blustery "Summer's Day!!"  To cheer on our youngest players and finally our players who again put in a great display of hurling skills during the series of games.

U10 Hurling Go Games

26/05/2012Posted by Darren Hamill

U10 Hurling Go Games  :  Venue: Woodlands Playing Fields  :  26th May 2012

Eire Og's U10 hurlers participated in the second week of a series of Go Games held in woodlands. In  perfect conditions, for once, the Og's were able to field an Antrim and Belfast team.

In total the Og's played an incredible 7 matches against a variety of teams from St Paul's, Lamh dhearg, St Gall's and St John's and the standard of hurling on show was a very high level.

The skills of lifting the sliotar and striking from the hand were evident from both Antrim and Belfast teams and also some blocking and hooking were on show as well.

From the Antrim side the following players got on the score sheet-Andrew, Connla, Daniel, Diarmaid, Dylan and Sean with both Brendan and Pearce S contributing to a great team performance. A highlight was the side line cut struck by Connla which received applause from both Eire Og and St Paul's supporters.

I am also informed that the Belfast team competed at a high level too and there was some great goals struck by Alex, Jack P (2) and Pearse H although I am not sure about Alex's "goal celebration!!". Aodhan, Caolan, Carla, Gerard and Jack C all played today at a level above their age and Georgia who was not feeling too well performed brilliantly in nets.

Thanks

I would like to thank Kieran Megraw for organising the Go Games and Paul Doherty and Sean Hawes for supervising the games.

I would now like to thank our loyal parents who put hurling ahead of trips to the seaside! etc...and for their loud vocal support for the team.

Finally I would like to thank our U10 players for again enhancing the name of Eire Og hurling team. The players were told to go out and enjoy themselves in the glorious conditions and I hope they did. Special mention must go to our younger players who played again at U8 level at the Colin Glen Multi Sports Centre on what was a very busy day for juvenile hurling.

Well done the Og's:  Alex  Andrew  Aodhan  Brendan  Caolan  Carla  Connla  Daniel  Diarmaid  Dylan  Georgia  Gerard  Jack C  Jack P  Pearce S  Pearse H  Sean
