P5/6 SW Antrim Championship

Venue: Tir Na Nog Randalstown

Date: 20th September 2015

Brid Og's P5/6 hurlers were invited to field in the SW Antrim championship at Tir Na Nog's pitch in Randalstown. Unfortunately several of our squad were unable to attend but our numbers were boosted with some of our P3/4s making the step up in grade. Our numbers were further increased when it was decided that we could add 3 Rasharkin players John, John Paul and Martin.

The games were full rules and 7 a side which meant we had several substitutes. Our first game was against Host team Tir Na Nog. The game was nip and tuck with the hosts always leading until we took the lead with 2 quick goals but Tir Na Nog got a very late score to make the contest a draw.

Our second game was against Ahoghill. This had a very strange start as Owen our goal keeper was away fetching another sliotar when Ahoghill put the game ball into our net. They then increased their lead as the much larger physical team were dominating possession. In fairness in the second half the Og's put in a better performance and got a lot of scores themselves but Ahoghill were the clear winners.

Our final game was against All Saints Ballymena and again this was a tight game . Both teams played some great hurling but we were very wasteful in front on goal as well as young David rattling the post with the keeper well beaten. At the final whistle Ballymena edged ahead with a couple of late scores. A highlight of the this match was the side line cut which Pearse put between the posts for a great pointed score.

I would like to thank Tom for the invite to this blitz and to Tir Na Nog for hosting the games. Thanks to our travelling parental support and I hope they enjoyed the blitz. Congratulations to host team Tir Na Nog who claimed overall victory in this blitz and became SW Antrim P5/6 champions for 2015. Finally well done to the players. Although it ended in a draw and 2 defeats the drawn game was against the eventual winners of the tournament and it give our younger players some game time at this level

Loch Mor Fleadh Tournament

Loch Mor Dal gCais Fleadh Tournament

Venue Crumlin Integrated School

Date: 4th September 2015

Og's P5/6 hurlers (Jan 2015) were invited to field in the Loch Mor Dal gCais festival of hurling at Crumlin Integrated school. Brid Og were drawn in pool 1 against Davitts, Saint Enda's and hosts Loch Mor  with the winners playing against the winners of pool 2 which included Lamh Dhearg, St Paul's and Sean Treacy's.

The Og's got off to a flyer with wins against the Davitts and the hosts Loch Mor. With Saint Enda's also on 2 wins the players were told the importance of this game. When the two teams lined out it was obvious that the Og's were up against a much larger physical team and our opponents raced into an early lead with some excellent pointed scores but this young hurling team have a great fighting spirit and with the Og's large parental support urging them on they were able to turn the result around with some excellent battling and finishing to earn their place in the Final

Their reward for their efforts in the group stages was a final spot against St Paul's who had eased their way through the second group. Games with Saint Paul's are always tight affairs and again the Og's appeared to be lining out against a much larger team. As usual the Og's did it the hard way when our opponents took an early lead by a goal and a point but this clicked the Og's into playing and a titanic tussle ensued between the both teams. It is said goals win matches and the Og's took the lead in the game with 2 quick goals in succession. Saint Paul's came back with a point of their own which meant there was the bare minimum between the sides but the Og's were able to hold on to the final whistle. There were a lot of scorers on the evening which included Daniel, Dara, David, Finlay, Niall, Pearse and Thomas but special mention has to go to our defence of Conlan, Owen and Zack who were like rocks at the back and an individual mention to Conlan who pulled off a fantastic save in the final to maintain our lead late in the game.

I would like to thank Banjo and Gavin for the invite to this fantastic tournament. Thanks to the players parental support and I am sure their hearts were in their mouths during the final. Final well done to the Og's again. This team have only been beaten by Lavey in competitive games this year and have taken the following scalps  Bredagh, Davitts Dunloy, Keady, Loch Mor, Saint Enda's, Saint John's , Saint Paul's, Rossa in the 3 tournaments we have played in and a lot of these players were also part of the U10 squad which went unbeaten in the North Antrim league in January.

N Antrim Blitz

26/07/2015Posted by Darren Hamill

North Antrim Blitz
Venue : Cushendun
Date: 25th July 2015

Brid Og's U10's were invited to field in an North Antrim Blitz hosted by Cushendun. Unfortunately the rain came down constantly but this didn't dampened the enthusiasm of all the hurlers on show

During the blitz we played Glenravel, Glenarm, Saint Enda's and second teams from Cushendall, Dunloy , Oisin's as well as our hosts under the combined name of Naomh Padraig. All the games were contested brilliantly with all the skills of hurling being displayed on the pitches. The Og's played some delightful hurling and there was some great link up play from backs through mid to the forward lines and this resulted in some excellent scores.

Thanks to Paul and Declan for the invite to the games. Thanks to John for helping with the team and to our parents who travelled and cheered on the team. Finally well done to our young hurlers who are developing into an excellent team. Special mention for Owen who took a knock to the arm during one of the early games and had to retire from playing.
