U10 Challenge Match v Bredagh

Venue: Cherryvale Playing Fields

Date: 30th August 2012

Eire Og's U10 hurlers were invited to a challenge match at Cherryvale against Bredagh. In the evening sunshine the Og's numbers were great and we were able to field a full 15 a side team.

Connla started the scoring with a great point from distance however this woke up a very skillful Bredagh midfield and forward lines who got some great scores during the game. One of their players was able to get scores at will and pointed a side line cut. The Og's response was a goal from Daniel.

At halftime Sean replaced Connla who had taken a knock in midfield and the team was told to get tighter to their marker all over the pitch but particularly in midfield. This seemed to happen in the second half however at times Bredagh did continue to get some great scores. During the last 10 minutes of the game the Og's started to gel better and in their best spell of the game the Og's scored several goals the highlight being a goal from Brendan from a strike off the shoulder. It was also great to see the link up play from backs through midfield up to our forward line and the skills of lifting, striking, blocking and hooking evident on the pitch. At the final whistle Bredagh came away with the victory however both teams had put on a great display of hurling.

I would like to thank Liam for inviting us to play this challenge match. As usual the Og's support from the sideline was vast and they encouraged our young players to another great performance.

Well done the Og's:  Andrew  Brendan  Ciara  Connla  Daniel  Diarmaid  Dylan  Erin  Gerard  Jack C  Jack P  Niall  Pearce

Sarsfiled Challenge Games

U8/U10 Challenge Games against Sarsfields

Venue: Sarsfields Pitch

Date: 31st July 2012

Eire Og were asked to field teams against Sarsfields at U8 and U10 level. Unfortunately due to the awful weather conditions both teams numbers were limited and Sarsfields were restricted to a young team.

U10 Match

The format was two games of 15 minutes each and the Og's lined out with Connla, Erin and Pearse protecting Ronan in nets. The Og's midfield duo were Andrew and Gerard with the two Jacks occupying our forward positions.

Most of our players got their names on the score sheet and it was great to see Erin Jack and Pearse amongst the goals. Andrew from midfield was clocking up the goals and points as well and Ronan got a score from his poc outs which had to be disallowed.

The skills of blocking and hooking were evident as well especially from Andrew, Connla and Gerard. From the sidelines it was great to watch a very competitive and skillful game of hurling played by both teams in horrendous conditions.

I would like to thank Gareth and Gary for organising the games and supplying us with a changing room to keep the players out of the rain until the pitches were lined out. Finally thanks to our players and their families for turning out and playing in awful weather conditions.

Well done the Og's :  Andrew  Connla  Erin  Gerard  Jack C  Jack P  Pearse  Ronan

SW Antrim Hurling Blitz

South West Antrim Hurling Blitz with Coaching

Venue: Saint Ergnat's Moneyglass

Date: 28th July 2012

Eire Og's hurlers were invited to a P6/7 Hurling Blitz which also included some coaching on hooking, and striking with the short stick. The hosts for the blitz were Saint Ergnat's Moneyglass, with Saint Enda's and Saint Mary's Ahoghill also fielding teams.

Eire Og v Saint Mary's Ahoghill

The Og's first match was against Saint Mary's and we lined out with Pearse H in nets with his defensive lines consisting of Ciara, Ewan and Gerard. Our midfield duo were Andrew and Connla with Daniel, Jack and Pearce S competing up front.

The Og's tried to match their opponents in the middle of the pitch but unfortunately our younger players found it hard to compete for the sliotar against much larger opposition. Young Pearse tried to get distance with his Poc outs and Connla got some great scores from midfield. There was also some great link up play from back line through mid to our forwards but at the end of the game there was a narrow victory for Saint Mary's.

Eire Og v Saint Ergnat's Moneyglass

The Og's second game was against the host team Saint Ergnat's. Jack replaced Pearse H in nets and Ciara and Pearce S reversed positions. The teams for this match were evenly matched and scores were exchanged in a very enjoyable game but unfortunately the scores total ended up in favour of our opponents.

Eire Og v Saint Enda's

The Og's final game was against Saint Enda's and our opponents got off to a flier with a couple of quick goals. At Half time the players were told to get closer to their opponents and to chase after the breaking ball  and indeed the Og's second half performance was much improved however our opponents came away with the victory.

I would like to thank Tom and Colm for inviting us to this blitz and the various coaching tips before the games started. Thanks also to our player's parents and family for travelling to the venue and their vocal support and finally a large thanks to our players especially those who were being asked to mark much larger opposition. Although the games ended in defeat for this young team there were a lot of positives to be taken away from this series of games.

Well Done the Og's !

Andrew  Ciara  Connla  Daniel  Ewan  Gerard  Jack  Pearce S  Pearse H
