U10 County Down Indoor Games

Date: 3rd February 2013

Venue: Eddie Irvine Centre, Bangor

Brid Og's A team took part in the second weekend of U10 County Down indoor hurling games . Our opponents for these games were Down side Saint Paul's Hollywood and Belfast clubs Gort Na Mona, Sarsfield's and Saint John's. The young team came away with 2 wins ( Gort na Mona and Saint John's) and 2 defeats. All the players Daniel, Gerard, Jack, Pearce S and Niall M got scores today and several of the goals were scored from distance includng goals from Gerard and Pearce which rattled the back of the net from the half way line. All the players positions on the day were rotated and it was great to see the team producing scores in all of the games. Thanks also to Saint John's and Gort Na Mona for boosting our players numbers in these games.

A young Brid Og B team played matches against B teams from Portaferry, Sarsfields, Ballygalget, Ballycran and Castlewellan. Portaferry ran out comfortable winners before the Ogs recorded a big victory over Sarsfields with a couple of goals each from Pearse and Emily adding to scores from Zach and Jamie. Pearse and Jamie were scorers in narrow defeats against Ballygalet and Ballycran. The same also two scored in the final match against Castlewellan. After going a goal down Brid Og responded to get a victory that was comfortable in the end, with Pearse grabbing a hat-trick of goals.

Well done the Og's

Brid Og Panel: Daniel, Gerard, Jack, Pearce S, Niall, Caolan, Conlan, Emily, Jamie, Oran, Pearse H, Zach

I would like to thank Micky for organising these games in this wonderful but cold venue. Our parental support was as usual very vocal as they spurred on our players during these games. Finally a big thank you to all the players who hurled brilliantly not only today but during this very busy hurling week-end for this age group which involved 12 games over the two days for some of our players.

U10 North Antrim League

Date 2nd February 2013

Venue Saint Malachy's College

Brid Og's (1) team were drawn against host club Saint Enda's, Saint Paul's, Saint Gall's, Lamh dhearg and Bredagh (2) in the preliminary round of the U10 North Antrim Indoor League at St Malachy's College.

The Og's numbers for these games were great and we had a grand total of 10 players. Our first game was against Saint Paul's and the game was controversial as one of their goals involved an opposition player in our square and we should have received a penalty as their keeper cleared the sliotar from well outside the square but unfortunately the score recorded by the referee was 2-1 to our opponents. The Og's second game was against Saint Gall's who won this game easily and were clearly the best team on show on the day. Our third game was a very exciting affair with the host club Saint Enda's being our opponents. Again the match was won by the narrowest of margins but fortunately we were the right side of a 3-2 victory with the goals coming from Gerard (2) and Jack. Controversy raised its head again in our fourth match against Lamh dhearg when their goal keeper came out of their square on 2 differant occasions and we didn't receive a penalty although our opponents did receive one at our expense. The final score in this game was 3-1 to Lamh dhearg. Our goal in this game was scored by Daniel. Our final game was against Bredagh (2) and again the match was a tussle between two evenly matched teams but unfortunately we could not convert our possession into scores and we were defeated by 2 goals to nil. Although the scoreboard shows 1 win and 4 defeats all the games except for the Saint Gall's match were very close affairs and on another day we could have been further up the groups leader board.

Venue: St Patricks College, Ballymena

Brid Og's second team faced a tough group with first teams from All Saints Ballymena, Bredagh, Dunloy, Rossa and Larne along with the second team from Loughguile providing the opposition. The Ogs started slowly as Rossa ran out winners in the first match. They responded well after going a goal down against Larne to comeback and record a 2-1 victory with goals from Alex and Pearse. Two defeats followed. First against All Saints and then despite a great performance in golas by Niall, Dunloy managed to past him one for the one crucial goal. The game of the day followed as next up were young hurlers from the All-Ireland champions. Brid Og got an early lead through Pearse but Loughguile levelled through a harshly awarded penalty. Niall put Brid Og ahead again only for Loughguile to equalise for a second time. When Oran hit the post from a narrow angle it seemed the Ogs luck was out but Pearse manage to grab another goal and a well-deserved victory. In the final match Bredagh ran out comfortable winners. On the day considering the age and inexperience of the players and the size and strength of some of the opposition the Ogs can be very pleased with their efforts.

I would like to thank Owen and the North Antrim Board for organising these games and All Saints and Saint Enda's for hosting. Thanks to John for his help in selecting the teams and our players parents and families for their support. Finally a big thank you to our players and hopefully they enjoyed the games.

U10 County Down Indoor Games

Date: 13th January 2013

The first games for the U10s in 2013 occurred when Brid Og's hurlers took part in the first weekend of Under 10 County Down Indoor Hurling Games at Our Lady and Saint Pat's Knock and the Abbey Grammar School Newry.

Venue: Our Lady and St Patricks, Knock

Brid Og's A team were faced with a difficult assignment in Our Lady and St Pats with games against A teams from Bredagh, Rossa, Sarsfields and Carryduff. The first game ended in defeat against a very good Bredagh team. There was an improvement in the second game. Pearce S scored a great goal with a long range strike from his hand, but Rossa ran out 3-1 winners. Next was a game against Sarfields. This turned out to be a battle of the goalkeepers. The game went from end to end and Niall pulled off some good saves, as did his Sarsfields couterpart. The Ogs did everything but score and Sarsfields very fortunately got the only goal when Niall's hurl got caught in the goal net as he was pulling to clear the ball. Thankfully, the Ogs did not let the disappointment get their heads down and saved their best for the last game against Carryduff. Alex scored two goals and although Carryduff got a goal right at the end, Brig Og recorded a well deserved 2-1 victory.

Venue: Abbey Grammar School, Newry

The Og's opponents at Abbey Grammar were the hosts Newry Shammrocks B Team, Ballela, Saint Peters Warrenpoint and Ballyvarley. All the games were very close and our young side came away with two wins (Newry Shamrocks, Ballela) a draw (WarrenPoint) and a loss against a strong Ballyvarley side. Our goal scorers today were Brian Daniel, James , Niall and Pearse. One of Niall's goals was a strike from distance and there was some confusion during one of the games, when Pearse seemed to score two quick goals which weren't recorded by the referee. There was also some great performances from Emily, Lorcan, and Samir. All the players positions were rotated during the four games and it could have been better for our young hurlers, but Emily's pull on the sliotar was brilliantly saved by the Warrenpoint keeper in our drawn game. At the end of the four games it was great to see the players trying to lift the sliotar when they got the opportunity and strike from the hand

Well done the Og's. Alex, Aodhan, Caolon, Gerard, Jack C, Niall, Oran, Pearce S, Brian, Daniel, Emily, James, Lorcan, Niall, Pearse H, Samir

I would like to thank Micky for inviting us to these games and John and Frank from St Brigids for their assistance. It was great to get these numbers of games so early in the season and I hope the players enjoyed the matches today.
