County Down Indoor Games

17/02/2013Posted by Darren Hamill

Venue: Eddie Irvine Centre
Date: 17th Feburary 2013

Brid Og' s young hurlers took part in the third weekend of U10 County Down games at the Eddie Irvine Centre in Bangor. We were scheduled to play Keady, Sarsfields B and Saint Peter's Warrenpoint and unfortunately Saint Paul's Antrim did not field. The first game against Keady was very physical in nature and controversial due to the dodgy referee who will remain nameless. The final score in the game was 2-1 to Keady although the Og's scored a goal through Aodhan when the REF had blown for a free to the Og's. The ref had to listen to Pearse all the way home about this decision. The match itself was great to watch and neither team give an inch. Young Pearse got our score in this game. The Og's midfield and forward lines were dominant in the games against Sarsfield's and Warrenpoint and we won the games quite easily. The majority of the players got on the score sheet with young Niall who at times was in the wars pushed his way through our oppnents defences and was rewarded with several scores.

As our games finished quite early we were able get another two matches on an adjacent pitch against All Saint's Ballymena and Saint John's B team. Again the Og's dominated these games and came away with 2 victories. Our players tried to lift the sliotar at every opportunity and it was great to see our younger players Emily, Niall, Pearse and Zack get scores in these extra games.

I would like to thank Micky for organising these games in this great venue. Thanks to John for helping with the teams and taking up the refereeing duties to the delight of young Niall. Thanks again to our players parents for giving up their week-ends to watch the games and finally a large thanks to our players who all competed brilliantly today and it was great to see large smiles on the players faces after the disappointment of losing yesterday's North Antrim final.

North Antrim Indoor League Section 6 Final

16/02/2013Posted by Darren Hamill

Venue: Seven Towers Leisure Centre, Ballymena

Date: 16th February 2013

Unfortunately our young hurlers fell at the last hurdle in section 6 of the N Antrim Indoor League when they were beaten by a large physical Slaughtneil team. On another day we might have converted our possession into more scores but it wasn't to be on the day. It must be remembered that the team done the hard work over the last two weekends and it was a great achievement in reaching these finals. To those players who next year are moving onto U12 I wish you good luck and hopefully we will have both our U10s and U12s at the finals next year. Congratulations again to all the players.

Well done Brid Og: Alex, Gerard, Conlan, Niall, Niall D, Oran, Pearce S, Pearse H, Shane, Zach

North Antrim Indoor League

U10 North Antrim League
Venue: Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Ballymoney
Date 9th February 2013

The U10s of Brid Og 2 played in Section 6 of the North Antrim indoor league at Our Lady of Lourdes, Ballymoney. The opposition were Latharna Og, St Endas 2, Burt 1, St Marys, Rasharkin and Slaughtneil 3.

The matches started off in good fashion as Shane scored the only goal in a victory over St Endas 2. The good form continued as Pearse H added to two goals apiece from Shane and Pearce S in a 5-0 win over St Marys. A third straight victory followed but only after a hard fought win over Burt. The Ogs fell a goal behind early on but managed to turn the game around with goals from Shane and Pearse H for a 2-1 victory. Just as the Ogs looked like cruising through the section they came up against a very big Slaughtneil team. In a very tight match the boys from Co Derry got the only goal of the game.

Following this defeat Brid Og knew that a win or draw against Latharna Og would be enough to qualify for the section final. Defeat would see Latharna Og qualify instead. Brid Og went a goal behind early in the match and went hard in search of an equaliser. Chances came and went, mostly saved by an impressive Larne goalkeeper. However, near the end a long range shot from Shane proved just a little to strong for the keeper and crept into the goal. The final whistle could not come soon enough, but when it came the 1-1 draw was enough to put Brid Og into the finals next weekend where they will play Slaughtneil.

Brid Og squad: Conlan, Niall, Oran, Pearce S, Pearse H, Shane, Zach
