U10 Pat Sheehan Memorial Hurling Tournament

Venue: Saint Gall's Pitch

Date: 11th May 2013.

Brid Og's U10 squad were invited to field a team in the annual Pat Sheehan Memorial tournament at Saint Gall's Milltown pitch. After the parading of the teams and the national anthem the Og's opponents in the group stage were Rossa, Ballycastle and Gort Na Mona.

Group Stages

Our first game was against Gort Na Mona and the Og's got off to a flier when young Pearse H pulled the sliotar into the back of the Gort Na Mona and this was a lead we held until half time. In the second half Gort Na Mona replied with a couple of goals and a point of their own but there was controversy in this game as both teams started with 8 players and then the Gorts added a ninth player who arrived late without informing us. When we added our ninth player we started to play the better hurling but unfortunately the whistle blew and the Gort's were the victors.

The Og's next game was against cup favourites Rossa who played some skillful and physical hurling. Shane who had put in a shift in midfield was fouled by a Rossa player and replaced Pearse H in nets who in turn was pulled on across the head and retired from the rest of the Rossa match. If either incident had been seen by the ref Rossa might have lost a player or two. At the final whistle Rossa came away with a high scoring victory.

Our last game in the group stages was against north antrim side Ballycastle. This game was closer than the Rossa game and the Og's had several chances to score but unfortunately our young team were beaten for the third time. It must be mentioned that the hurling shown by both sides in this match was of a very high level as both halves were played in horrendous weather conditions with a hail stone storm. Caolan took a knock in this game and retired from the rest of the tournament and Alex, Aodhan and Jack D were unable to  play on.

Knockout games

As the Og's had lost all their games we were graded into the Shield tournament after lunch. Our opponents in the quarter final were Armagh side Keady. The omens weren't great as Keady had recently beaten us well in a tournament organised by Glenavy. Any thoughts of going out at this stage however, were quickly erased when the Og's put in a tremendous effort and won the game by a score line of 3:3 to 0:0 with Jack C, Niall, Pearse H and Shane getting our scores.

Our reward for this victory was a semi final slot against County Down side Ballygalget. This match was very exciting affair. The Ballygalget side had a very strong , spine to it and quickly scored a point through their excellent forward player although our defenders could have gotten tighter to him. The Og's however had a lot of possession and we were awarded a free about 21 yards out from goal. Pearse H took the free and as in the Keady match the sliotar hit the back of the Ballygalget net. Unfortunately young Pearse H had came up from a defensive position and the quick thinking of the Ballygalget keeper who poced the ball over our celebrating midfield into the hands of  Ballygalget forward (Pearse's marker) and he struck the ball into the back of the Og's net. Although the Og's had several later chances our opponents started to rack up a couple of pointed scores and the final whistle signaled the end of our participation in this tournament for this year.

Thanks

I would like to thank Joe for the invite to this great tournament which is basically an U10 competition for the best hurling teams in Ulster. It shows you the level of hurling when teams like Ballygalget and Eoghan Ruadh Dungannon are placed in the shield part of the tournament. Congratulations to Joe and his Saint Gall's team on winning the cup and Ballygalget on winning the shield. I would like to thank Ciaran, Gavin and John for helping with team selections and drilling our team between games. Thanks to our parents who came out in force again and had to stand on the side lines for over 5 hours in awful weather conditions. Finally I would like to thank all the players (16 in total) who wore the Brid Og shirt during these games. This is a very young team with several P3's and P4's in our squad and although I would like to thank those players who next year with be in our U12 ranks the future looks bright for Brid Og hurling in this competition in the next year or two.

Falls Park League

P6 Belfast City Council Hurling League

Date: 28th April 2013

Venue: Fall's Park

Brid Og participated in the fourth week of games at Falls Park and faced St Pauls, St Johns and Sarsfields. With Darren away in Croke Park watching the big ball games, it was left to Ciaran and Gavin to pick the team this time.

First up was St Pauls. The Ogs played against the strong wind in the first half and though they battled hard, St Pauls got a goal and a 3 point over the bar score. At half-time Brid Og were told that with the wind in the second half they were goog enough to pull the game back. The players responded well and an over the bar 3 pointer from Niall brought the Ogs back into the match. Near the end Pearse H put a free over the bar. With the scoring system used in these games - 3 points for scoring over the bar and 1 point for under the bar - this was enough to give Brid Og a win by 6 points to 4.

The next match against St Johns was a very tight affair. Both teams showed good levels of skill, but St Johns physicality was crucial as they came away with a narrow victory with two over the bar scores to Brid Og's one. Oisin got a very good score for the Ogs.

The final match was against Sarsfields and Brid Og dominated possession for most of the game. However, a goal from Aodhan was the Ogs only reward. Their hard work was almost undone right on the stroke of half-time when Sarsfield broke down the field. Oran, who had been a virtual spectator in goals, moved swiflty off his line to make a good save and clearance. In the second half Shane added an over the bar score to give Brid Og a comfortable enough victory, though they probably deserved a couple of more scores for the effort they put in. Weather conditions at times were fairly poor, but the Ogs hurled well throughout. It would be fair to say that the team have made great strides since the start of 2013 and they display a great attitude when representing their team. They now have a record of 9 wins and 3 defeats in the Falls Park league.

Thanks to Tommy and Karl for organising these games. Thanks also to Gavin for assisting with the team today and to John for refereeing. It was hard to hear our supporters in the blustery conditions but again we had a good turn-out of parents cheering on the players. Again, the number of kids representing Brid Og was impressive, with 15 children playing today.

U9 SW Antrim airborne hurling blitz

27/04/2013Posted by Darren Hamill

U9 SW Antrim airborne hurling blitz
Date: 27th April 2013
Venue: St Patrick's Ballymena.

It was the turn of our U9's to participate in the SW Antrim airborne blitz. The competing teams were host club Ballymena, Brid Og,  Creggan, Moneyglass and Saint Mary's Rasharkin.

These blitzes are concerned with scoring for the skills of lifting, striking, catching, hand passes, hooking and blocking. There is also 2 square targets for each team to score in.

During the first hour of the blitz the teams played each other in a league type basis and there were wins against Creggan, Moneyglass and Rasharkin. The game against All Saint was very physical in nature with our hosts playing hard fast hurling which some of players had not experienced in an indoor setting before .

After a break for group photos Tom announced that the winning team stays on. The Og's lined out with Shane and Conlan at the back, Zack And Niall in midfield with Pearse, Oran and Liam in forward positions. The Og's first game was against Creggan and from the start the Og's were collecting the points for the skills. Conlan and Shane were protecting our targets well and were getting scores for lifting and striking. Shane in particular was linking passes to both our midfield and forward line. Zack and Niall were covering vast areas of the hall and their lifting of the sliotar was very impressive. Oran and Pearse linked up well but unfortunately their attempts at scoring in the target fell short. At the final whistle Tom indicated that the Og's were the victors.

The Og's fine form continued in their games against Saint Ergnat's and Saint Mary's when they were awarded the victories. This meant that the Og's would face a rematch against All Saints. This game was a classic and the Og's had learnt from their first encounter. From the throw in no quarter was given by either teams and players were throwing their bodies into tackles. At one stage 3 Brid Og players put immense pressure on the Ballymena back line that they could get the sliotar out of their half due to some great blocking. All Saints were clocking up the scores themselves with some great lifting and passing and in one of their raids into the Brid Og territory they were awarded a 3 point target score which meant our opponents had won 10-9 in points scored. Although the Og's had been defeated they had shown a high level of skill in full rules hurling and some of our players are only 7.

Thanks
I would like to thank Tom for organising these games and for our invite to this blitz. I would also like to thank Ciaran, Gavin and Tara for travelling to this venue and their team selections. Again our young players are showing us that they can compete at a high level at this age group in Antrim hurling circles and beyond.
