P5/P6 SW Antrim Blitz

Venue: Moneyglass

Date: 16th August 2014

Brid Og's P5/P6 hurlers were invited to a SW Antrim blitz at Moneyglass and the other teams fielding were All Saint Ballymena, Creggan, Saint Mary's Rasharkin and our hosts Moneyglass.

Brid Og's first game was against  All Saints and these games are always very tight affairs. We were able to field 8 players on the day and Niall got some great scores as did Fintan and Gerard to give us the victory.

Our second game was against Moneyglass whose team mostly consisted of camogs as their football team was involved in a blitz. Our team were told to respect the girls and we weren't surprised with their high standard of play in this game in fact Conlon, Pearse and goalkeeper Niall  had to do some excellent clearances to keep our goal intact. Our midfield of Fintan, Gerard and Owen started to dominate the game and both Eoghan and Jack had chances to score but we had to wait until late in the game for Gerard to poc the sliotar over the bar to give us victory by the most slender of margins.

Our third game was against Creggan and as they could only field 7 players we had a sub so positions were being changed. After a very bright spell at the start of the game we could not convert our chances into scores. This give Creggan the confidence to run at us and they got several pointed scores to take the victory.

Our final game was against Saint Mary's Rasharkin. Similar to the previous game we had substitutes as they could only field 6 players but they were all very skilful and took the victory with some get scores.

I would like to thank Tom for organising this blitz and Colm for hosting. A special thanks to Tom who brought along the Liam Harvey Cup won when Antrim beat Derry in the Ulster Championship in Owenbeg in July as well as the Ulster and All Ireland Junior Club championship trophies won by Creggan last year and after the games the kids from all the teams were able to lift them and get some photos taken. If anyone has some can they pass on for club websites. Thanks to John for looking after the teams and to Gerard and Micheal for travelling to the games. Finally well done to the players who hurled brilliantly today and hopefully they can lift the same trophies for themselves in the near future.

North Antrim Blitz

U10 North Antrim Blitz

Venue: Saint Enda's

Date: 3rd August 2014

Brid Og's U10 hurlers fielded in an North Antrim blitz hosted by glengormley side Saint Enda's.

The teams competing on the day were McQuillans Ballycastle, Ruairi Og's Cushendall, Emmet's Cushendun, Oisin's Glenariffe, Loughgiel Shamrocks, belfast side Saint Pauls and host club st Enda's.

Our first game was against the Emmets and in a large pitch and there was plenty of room for the players to show their skills. Unfortunately the Cushendun side were able to get the scores and win the game comfortably although we did have several chances of our own.

Our second game was against Belfast side St Paul's and this was a cracking game. The Og's took the lead with a point from Niall but St Pauls came back with a point of their own. The sliotar was constantly being knocked back and forward but Pearse was able to score a goal which put us in a commanding position although in fairness to St Pauls they came back with 2 points without reply to give us victory by the narrowest of margins.

Our third game was against Oisin's glenariffe. This side were very skilful and put our team under sustained pressure were we had difficulty clearing our lines but in fairness our defence played brilliantly although Oisins did get several scores to take the victory

Our fourth game was against host club Saint Enda's and we found a team who were hungry for the sliotar in fact they produced some excellent blocks and hooking and their forwards got several major scores to take the victory. Unfortunately Young Zack had taken a knock to the hand in this game and had to go to hospital to get this checked out but thankfully it wasn't a break but just severe bruising so hopefully he can enjoy his up and coming holidays.

Our fifth game was against McQuillans Ballycastle. We thought we had got off to a flying start when great link up play between Niall and Pearse resulted in Pearse scoring a cracking goal only for this to be ruled out as Niall had soloed the sliotar in the previous possession. My ears were sore listening to Pearse the rest of the day!. Our opponents started to play some great hurling themselves and got some points and major scores themselves . The Og's did get a pointed scored from Niall and David and young Niall had a great opportunity to get a major score only for the Ballycastle keeper to produce a spectacular save to deny him.

Our sixth game was against Ruairi Og's Cushendall. Again this was a cracking game with both teams competing for the sliotar. This was our highest scoring game of the day with Niall get a point and David scoring 2 goals - one with the stick and one with his famous and reliable foot! But this was not enough as Ruairi Og's came away with a narrow victory.

Unfortunately time had beaten us and there wasn't enough time to play Loughgiel Shamrocks.

I would like to thank Declan and the rest of the North Antrim clubs for their invite to this blitz and thanks to Paddy and Saint Enda's for hosting. Thanks to Ciaran (just back from his hols), Gavin and Tara for helping with the team and to our travelling parents for their support from the side lines. Finally well done to the players who competed against some of the best hurling teams in the county today.

South West Antrim Games

Venue: Tir Na Nog - Randalstown

Date: 26th July 2014

Brid Og's P5/6  hurlers played in the latest round of South West Antrim Games at Tir Na Nog  Randalstown. This was the first game after the summer break and it didn’t take long for this young team to get back into the swing of things.

The first game was against Loch Mor and the Brig Og team got off to a blistering start and dominated the game throughout. The team played as a cohesive unit from the outset with some great link up play in midfield. The scores came quick and fast and the team positions were changed around to give as many players as possible the opportunity to register a score. The final score was:

Brid Og 2-6 Loch Mor 0-0 Scorers: Niall 0-5 Liam 1-0 Zack 1-0 Gerard 0-1

Our next game saw us face All Saints, a team that had defeated us in previous South West skill based games. This game was a much tighter affair with our players having to fight for possession. The game was low scoring which was a reflection of the tight marking and equal skill of both teams. The highlight came when young Liam managed to scuff a ball across the line in the face of players who were twice his size. This was followed by celebrations which reflected some of the world cup type celebrations. Gerard got a rare to chance to play at the offensive end of the field and put a few over the bar – watch this space as he may play in this position more often. The final score was:

Brid Og 1-2 All Saints 0-1 Scorers: Liam 1-0 Gerard 0-2

Our third game was against host club Tir Na Nog. This was a tight game with both sides very evenly matched in terms of skill, speed and ability. This provided for a great game but a low score line and the host club came away with the narrowest of victories.

Brid Og 0-1 Tir Na Nog 0-2 Scorers: Niall 0-1

The penultimate game saw the Brid Og team face Creggan. Creggan were worthy opponents and the marking tactics and skills shown in this game were amongst the best seen this season so far. The Brid Og team managed to register another worthy victory.

Brid Og 2-0 Creggan 1-0 Scorers: Niall 1-0 David 1-0

The last game in the day was against Moneyglass and again this was a tightly fought affair. The large physical Moneyglass players placed our team on the back foot at the outset. However the young team were undeterred and soon found their stride. Unfortunately they could not sustain this and Moneyglass ran out worthy winners.

Brid Og 1-0 Moneyglass 1-4 Scorers: Niall 1-0

Thanks to Tom for organising the games and to Darren, Ciaran and Tara for helping with the teams. Thanks also to the parents for travelling and for their encouragement and support. The biggest thanks must go to the players who should be proud of a very solid set of results. Thanks also to young Dylan who was on a one day secondment from another club, the name of which will remain nameless.

Team: Niall, Zack, Pearse, David, Gerard W, Liam, Oran, Conlan, Dylan (On Secondment), Eoin, Michael
