Eire Og

The seventies began a very successful couple of decades for Éire Óg. The minor hurlers won the league in 1972 and the senior footballers reached the final of the South Antrim Junior Football Championship, only to lose by a point to St Malachy’s.

1974 was an extremely successful year, the Martin Cup was won for the first time, another Junior Hurling Championship was also added when Ballycastle were beaten 5-6 to 2-4 at Corrigan Park, as was the South Antrim Hurling Championship( Éire Óg beating Columba’s, Sarsfields and then St Malachy’s), and the footballers also won the South Antrim League Division 2. These senior successes in 1974 were unfortunately not matched by the minor footballers when Éire Óg unfortunately lost the Minor Championship final to St John’s.

1979 Beringer Cup Winners

1976 saw the senior hurlers win promotion to the All County Division 3. 1977 unfortunately saw favourites Éire Óg beaten in a close, high scoring game 3-07 to 3-06 by Davitt’s in the final of the Beringer Cup, but Éire Óg’s footballers would win two consecutive league titles. In 1977 they won Division 4 and in 1978 then topped Division 3. The hurlers were pipped to the 1978 Division 4 hurling league title by Davitts, denying the Ógs the double in 1978. Had they beaten Davitt’s in their last game then the title would have been theirs. Unfortunately, they then failed to beat Riverdale Rovers in the subsequent promotion play off.

1979 was another successful year with the South Antrim and All County Junior Football Championships, Beringer Cup and . Despite having to play seven games to clinch the JFC, culminating in an easy 2-13 to 2-03 victory over Ballycastle, it was a relatively straightforward route to championship honours. The same couldn’t be said for the Beringer Cup though. Replays, stirring comebacks both for and against the Ógs and tough, close matches meant that Éire Óg fully deserved their first Beringer Cup success after St Paul ’s took them to a second game in the final. Not to be outdone, the hurlers won the 1979 League Division 4, matching the Ógs team of 1974 in winning four senior trophies in the season.
